This report summarises the work of the Development Group over the past year.
South Site
Professional
advice has been sought with regard to the marketing of the South Site.
After much discussion of possible options the definitive advice we have
received is that the site to be sold should include the Manse.
Occupation of the site is unlikely be transferred to developers until
the North site project is complete and a new Manse is available for the
Minister. Currently, indicative values for the South site ore being
obtained on the basis of the estimated value of the site for conversion
to residential use. We are conscious of the limitations of working
within a Conservation Area. Accordingly advice has been sought from
East Dunbartonshire Planning Department on Local Plan Guidance.
North Site
An
'As Built Survey' has been carried out providing drawings of the North
building which will be a valuable reference document for the
Architects. In addition a 'Conditions Survey' was undertaken giving a
detailed report on the current condition of the building, enabling the
Architects to identify the areas where repairs can be incorporated
within the redevelopment project. This report also draws attention to
the areas where essential repair work should be carried out as soon as
possible.
Retention of former South Church Artefacts
Inventories
of the artefacts of both the former North and South Church buildings
are being carried out. Advice has been sought from the Church of
Scotland with regard to the retention and repositioning within the
North Building, of valuable artefacts and stained glass windows which
are presently in the South Building. Representatives from the Church's
Committee on Church Art and Architecture
(CARTA) have visited both buildings and have provided a very full and
helpful report. CARTA have indicated their willingness to comment on
and assess our proposals as our plans for development of the North
building evolve.
Architect for the Project
Following the period of in-depth research carried out by the
Development Group, a full Briefing Document was prepared and issued
to four firms of architects. Interviews were held as a result of which
Groves-Raines Architects Ltd. was appointed.
Congregational Questionnaire
A
Questionnaire inviting members of the congregation to express views on
the refurbishment of the North Building was circulated to all members
of the Congregation in late autumn. Although only 10% of the
congregation responded some interesting views were expressed which the
Development Group will take into account when looking ahead to the next
stage of the project.
